Purpose & Considerations
Rowan is a 16-year-old artist based in Minnesota. He’s a super cool kid, and you’ll often find him covered in paint and listening to MCR. He’s been creating for probably over half his life and longer than I can remember, and plans to attend MCAD to major in Comic Art.
In creating this website, one of my major goals was to help support Rowan in creating a portfolio for school. He recently started taking art commissions and needs a platform to get that going, too. Additional considerations include, 1, Rowan is an artist and wants to update this website himself, and, 2, he is on a teen-artist budget.
Design
Drafts and Decisions
All good designs start with drafts! To gain some direction with this project, I sent Rowan three quick ideas based off of what I know about him.

Out of the three samples I showed him, Rowan liked the space style most. He wanted to take things in more of a pixel art game direction, which was super fun to create!

He liked this collage style and concept but wanted things that looked more 80s/90s style.

This one was not a hit, but helped me understand Rowan’s dislikes for colors and layouts.
Final Design

To give Rowan 100% creative control over his website and keep costs low, I purchased a website domain through Squarespace and created this website through Canva. Since Rowan is already on my Canva plan, this means his monthly costs are $0.

After a game-style home screen, users select cards to proceed with navigation. This works because the website has so few pages.

The Shop page is styled like a video game store, but tiles lead to Paypal links.

The My Art page features clickable tiles and arrows for a visual design reminiscent of the Nintendo DS.
Final Thoughts
After finishing in less than 10 hours, this project was a great example of how quickly a website really can come together. It’s clear how much I’ve learned compared to past projects. Now, I am able to streamline and work much more efficiently that I have a solid creative process.
I feel accomplished in my goals of offering Rowan something to expand upon for an art portfolio and online presence. I’m excited to see where he takes it!
